[edit] Kinetics
Hi,
I stumbled upon your question (at Talk:Kinetics) about the rate of increase of the metallicity of the universe. There may be a term for this, but I would not expect it to be called 'kinetics'. The governing principles are entirely different. A chemical reaction occurs when reactant species come together, dissociate, and form some new species. The metallicity of the universe increases when stars form from gas clouds and begin to burn hydrogen at rates dictated by their respective sizes. I'll admit that you raise a thought-provoking analogy, but IMHO it's not good for anything more than idle musings. I've watchlisted this page, so if you wish to reply, you can do so right here. --Smack (talk) 23:00, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback! The most relevant article that I've found so far (just recently, too) is Nucleocosmochronology, which is still quite stubby. I have updated Talk:Kinetics accordingly. Note however that increase in the effective metallicity of the universe involves distribution processes such as novae, supernovae, and the ejection of planetary nebulae. Distribution processes must be taken into account along with production processes to account for the metallicity of new stars that form. --Eric Forste 08:00, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Lately I'm trying to figure out how to present this question to the reference desk. --Eric Forste (Talk) 04:35, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Transportation etc.
((old text moved to Talk:Berkeley, California))
- I started working on a rewrite of history of science and technology (the discipline) at User:Fastfission/HST, but I got side-tracked and never got back on it. Not sure if that is of any use to you, though. I'm still not sure how one ought to divide up the question about whether it is about the discipline or about the content itself, but I think there's got to be some intelligent distinction... hmm.
- I've looked a couple times at the Japanese atomic program article and it's so far off kilter that it's hard to imagine how to get it back without scrapping most of it. Which I might just end up doing. The entire thing is based on one bogus 1946 report (the only link to which is on a conspiracy theory website) and a more recent book of dubious merit which has decided to declare the report accurate, both of which are wholly in the face of all other nuclear historiography. Even the most rigorous NPOV attempts are going to privilege the conspiracy theory with more merit than it is worth—it ought to be regulated to a paragraph or two at the end of an article on their abortive program. I might try to do that in the next few days, while I have some time.
- I don't know a whole lot about the history of chemistry, I'm afraid, except the development of 20th century chemical conglomorates in Germany, and other 20th century stuff, but I could try to work that in somewhere there... anyway, it is nice to find someone else interested in doing the grunt work on this sort of stuff.
--Fastfission 06:55, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your helpful remarks. Please don't delete User:Fastfission/HST anytime soon, because I just put it on my watchlist and I hope to give it a serious longterm stare sometime soon. --Arkuat 2005 July 8 04:32 (UTC)
[edit] Japanese atomic program
Hi. I have significantly rewritten the text, and shortened and moved all disputed reports to the end. Please have a look at the article, and also the talk page for the details of my changes, and let me know if you still feel the need for a disputed tag. Again, thank you very much for your patience. -- Chris 73 Talk 00:50, Jan 28, 2005 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I'm very busy right now, but I will look over it in the next few weeks. --Eric Forste 18:19, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- OK, perhaps that's years. I keep hoping someone from Japan will clean up that mess. --Arkuat 2005 July 8 04:45 (UTC)

Thanks for the improvements. User:Logophile
[edit] Bombay High Court
You had posted:
This an awful lot about the building, and very little about the court. Goa says that Mumbai is the judicial capital of the state of Goa because it falls under the authority of this court. What other places outside of Maharashtra fall under this court's authority? --Eric Forste 03:16, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- The Union territory of Daman and Diu also comes under the jurisdiction of the Bombay High Court. User:Nichalp/sg July 3, 2005 05:27 (UTC)
Thanks, and keep up the good work educating everyone about India. --Arkuat 2005 July 8 04:16 (UTC)
[edit] Endosymbiotic chloroplasts of eukaryotic origin in protists
Sorry about the boneheaded edits I made to Euglenozoa and Cercozoa, and thank you for reverting them so quickly. My notion of what a chloroplast is got a lot bigger after I went back and read more carefully. --Eric Forste 8 July 2005 01:00 (UTC)
- Don't mention it. I'm glad to know someone has gotten something out of the articles. :) Josh

[edit] Historiography of science and technology
Sorry to not get back to you sooner on this, I've been thinking about it a bit. I think you're probably right. I was hoping that this weekend I might get a chance to add some more to those other sections but I'm not sure I'll be able to. If you'd like to move it into the main article namespace, you're welcome to. If you'd like a copy of the article I was drawing largely upon (the Dennis article cited in it), I'd be happy to forward it to you by e-mail. Just use the "E-mail this user" function and I'll reply with it back. --Fastfission 21:53, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I'm only going to move it if I can't restrain myself from editing it (as in adding to it). I'll move it before I add to it. Thanks for typing all that in! --Eric Forste 22:05, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
I made the move and shuffled it around a bit, filling in a few sketchy things. I decided that Historiography of science was probably the best title for it at the moment as it doesn't have a lot on technology in it (and I think that might be hard to incorporate to the current narrative). Thanks for lighting a fire under me. --Fastfission 22:24, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] IDRIVE
[edit] You helped choose {{subst:IDRIVEtopic article}} as this week's WP:ACID winner
- Ah, the magic of templates. This was added because I voted for South America, but I never voted for Lhasa (and may not have voted for whatever the current article improvement drive is now). I hope such notices in the future will be added to this thread, and not the end of the talk page, but hey, I can always edit my own talk page after the fact. --Eric Forste (Talk) 04:27, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] The E=MC2 Barnstar
If you don't bother to, please move this barnstar to your user page. Deryck C. 03:54, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
- (copied from Deryck Chan's talk page) Recognition at last! Thank you for your award. I'll figure out where I most want to show off my very first barnstar after I've had a chance to bask in the glory for a while. --Eric Forste (talk) 04:26, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
My pleasure to receive thanks. Deryck C. 04:38, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mergism
(copied from Joyous's talk page) I just added merge tags to Chinese constellation and lunar mansion, and later relented, settling for adding the two articles to one another's "See also" sections. Does this mean I'm a faithless mergist, or an inclusionist who is occasionally tempted toward mergism? --Eric Forste (talk) 06:41, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
- It means that you are thoughtful and not stuck on one path. (Now I sound like a fortune cookie). Joyous (talk) 14:21, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hello
Hello back - I see you've been to the Ramallah page. I've been thinking of creating a page on the Ramallah Friends School, but need to gather some materials. Looking forward to it! Ramallite (talk) 15:19, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Uh-oh, EFI-oh
Hey EF -- I would like to take out that bit about EFI at the beginning of the article. Here's why:
1. I think I phrased it in the right way: EFI does not condemn homosexual people, but does condemn homosexual actions. I know, I know, this is total BS, but technically it is true, and it is a substantive difference. Basically, what I was trying to say there is that there is no group that has said something like "homosexuals are evil". Even EFI has not said "homosexuals are bad people", indeed, the only thing I could find explicitly about EFI and homosexuality is that thing I linked about Earlham college, and, yes, it sucks, but I think it's a stretch to call it a "condemnation of homosexual people."
Basically, OK, I don't know anybody in EFI, but I am worried that we are casting too negative a light on them.
2. If that doesn't work for you, I would suggest that we cut that sentence all together. One main reason is that I think it's important for people to have to wade through all the disclaimers first so that they can see the complexity of the issue.
All the best,
Sdedeo 09:20, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Let me add two other things: if you have any more info -- espeically web links -- on EFI and homosexuality, they would be very helpful. The other is that it seems very unlikely to me that anybody at EFI would assent to the statement "I outright condemn homosexual people". I just can't believe it. So I've changed that intro again, back. If you have evidence to the contrary, definitely add it in. Sdedeo 09:23, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Final: hi again. OK, I did some pretty intense googling, and found a really disturbing statement on EFSW (EFI's Southwest Yearly Meeting.) Apparently, homosexuality -- the whole kitten-kaboodle -- is not only condemned, but it is grounds for termination of employment. EFSW is definitely a large, mainstream, etc. etc. Man, I am surprised. I've added this info into the article, and I've decided to take out the sentence in question, leaving the specifics for later. Sdedeo 09:40, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Re: your comments. Thanks -- I agree. I've seen mention that some Friends groups are renaming themselves and adding the word "Evangelical" as a way to signal their opposition to gay marriage (and other causes they consider "too liberal".) I have the feeling that even EFI is fragmented about the issue of homosexuals. In particular, I find it telling that there is not one reference to "homosexual", "homosexuality" or "gay" on the EFI website, and the references to "marriage" on the site don't discuss sexuality even in a sort of coded way. My personal feeling is that everyone is kind of lying low a little and trying to chill things out, while some yearly meetings within EFI and FUM are taking a stand either way. [edit] IDrive
Thank you for taking care of the dates on nominations while I was away.--Fenice 05:14, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks again
For your work on the protist articles. I just figured that thanking you once and lefthandedly for reverting a couple of my ill-advised edits wasn't really enough. --Eric Forste (Talk) 06:53, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you, Eric, I really do appreciate it. By the way, I wonder if you have any suggestions for what areas need the most attention, once the top-level groups are all filled in. Also, I'm curious about user:Arkuat/Taxonomy and how much you'd like it to keep track of. Josh
I don't have any such suggestions yet, because the english wikipedia articles are better than any textbooks I have here where I live, and I'm still absorbing the former. If I have changes, I'll either make them if I'm confident, or discuss them with you if I'm not. If you have any interest in modifying User:Arkuat/Taxonomy in order to bring it into better correspondence with well-established research, that would please me, and since I try to use that thing to guide my reading (and sometimes edits) of articles about living (and extinct) taxa on our wikipedia, that is what I'd do with your contributions. But the question this brings up for me is this: where is the main namespace article for these kind of collaborative edits? And if there isn't one, what should its name be? --arkuat (talk) 05:59, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Latin America
You have voted for South America on Wikipedia:This week's improvement drive a few weeks ago. Now Latin America is nominated. Hope you can help us again by voting for Latin America. --Fenice 08:00, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] John III of Portugal
You voted for John III of Portugal on WP:IDRIVE, but it dropped out. Due mainly to language problems it is not featured quality yet. I have renominated it at the Biography Collaboration, so it gets the attention needed to become featured quality. If you are still interested you can vote for it there.--Fenice 12:03, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Pallas
Hi Arkuat/Eric,
Concerning minor planet Pallas: it is typically depicted as non-spherical, and roughly football-shaped (N. American football, obviously). Wikipedia lists its dimensions as 570×525×482 km, which is egg-shaped rather than spherical. Ceres is the only asteroid which is known to be round. Cheers!--Firsfron 13:33, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks back :)
Hey, Eric. Thanks for taking the time to drop by my talk page and leave such a kind note regarding my work on AAVE. Yeah, Oakland was ugly. Same mentality here on Wikipedia, too -- everywhere, in fact. It just blew up there the loudest. At least there were/are some enlightened individuals who were willing to try different (and, IMO, promising) approaches to teaching African American children.
