Talk:Erik Fleming (councilor)

[edit] Rename to Erik Fleming
The name of this person is Erik or Eric, not Eerik which is the Finnish translation. Teuton 16:05, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose. This is English Wikipedia, not a place to mask people behind their names' translations to Swedish. Suedois 00:26, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- Support. This is the English Wikipedia, so unless he's commonly known as something else in English (and frankly I don't think he even is very commonly known in English), we should stick to his own native tounge, no matter what he might be known as in other languages, such as Finnish. I'm sure you don't seriously dispute that Fleming was a native Swedish speaker, Suedois? -- Jao 21:30, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- Support Only mention I can find is in J. Ahokas' History of Finnish Literature, which spells Erik. Unless a source for this spelling (in English) is found (or a denunciation of Ahokas as a Swedish chauvinist, I suppose), let's use this. Septentrionalis 00:09, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose move. Medieval names do not have native languages, rendering only depends od the language of the scribe. Eerik is mainly known in his native Finland, so most sources refer to him as Eerik.
- The proposal is however mute: the article name Erik Fleming is already taken by an Erik R. Fleming from Mississippi. There is also an Erik Fleming [1] in IMDB. In fact Google lists 40 900 eriks without Wikipedia. It is more likely that Erik Fleming will have to be turned into a disambiguation page. Eerik Fleming is far better than Erik Fleming (father of Klaus Fleming). --Petri Krohn 11:26, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- That could be solved by using Erik R. Fleming; but since this article has no function but to be a naming dispute, I have made it a redirect; all its content is in Klaus Fleming. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 19:45, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- Redirect to Klaus Fleming. Gene Nygaard 01:34, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- The name of the person is Erik Fleming. The rule under Wikipedia is that the original name is to be used, not Finnish translations. We do also not translate marshall Carl Gustaf Mannerheim to Kaarle Kustaa Mannerheimo?! Or Petri Krohn to Petri Kruunu? We should stick to the normal wiki rules also here. - Based on the sole article link and the name in the article and the logic above, I decided to move Erik Fleming to Erik Fleming (councilor). This works as a very short dab. Erik Fleming is now a dab page. Vegaswikian 21:18, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
