What's the copyright status of security camera images? Possibly public domain, as there's no author. Or perhaps the camera's owner is the copyright holder, and this is fair use? dbenbenn | talk 02:40, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says the video was released to the public in 2000.

According to that web page it is released on condition that the footage is not used for monetary gain. That probably means non-commercial use only. Thuresson 02:34, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

The idea that all security camera footage is public domain is, as far as I can tell, a novel legal argument. Of all things, we should not be doing 'original research' in U.S. copyright law.--Pharos 03:08, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
