Erispoë

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erispoë was a Duke of Brittany, who succeeded his father Nominoë in 851. He successfully faced Charles the Bald on the 22nd August 851 at Jengland near the river Vilaine.

Erispoë met Charles II in Angers in the days following the battle and agreed a peace treaty in return for the recognition of Breton independence, as well as territorial concessions.

In some official documents, he is referred to as King rather than Duke, but it is difficult to be sure if this was known by the King, Charles the Bald.

Erispoë married Marmohec and had at least 2 children including a boy named Conan, and a girl.

In 853 (as in 843) the town of Nantes was again plundered by the Normans. Erispoë launched a war against them but it came to an end when the Normans left around 855.

His reign ended in November 857 with his assassination on the altar of a church (a place of asylum) by his cousin and successor Salomon, aided by Alcmar, the Bishop of Nantes.
