Eric Ellsworth Hipple (born September 16, 1957 in Lubbock, Texas) was a former professional football player who was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 4th round of the 1980 NFL Draft. A 6'2", 198 lbs. quarterback from Utah State, Hipple played in 9 NFL seasons for the Lions from 1980-1986 and 1988-1989. His best year as a pro came during the 1985 season when he threw 17 touchdown passes.

As a result of his son's suicide in 2000 (his son was 15), he has become involved in educating people about the dangers of depression. In this role, he is on the board of directors of the University of Michigan Depression Center.

Eric Hipple disarmed a knife wielding man at a party in Michigan, presumably saving lives according to the police.[1]
