From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eric Carlson (1894 – 1932) was a World War I veteran from Oakland, California. During the height of the Depression, he particiated in the Bonus March, a rally for expedited veterans' benefits in Washington, D.C.. After the "Bonus Bill" was defeated in Congress and money was appropriated to send the veterans home, the U.S. Army was sent in with tanks, cavalry and soldiers with bayonet-affixed rifles to disperse the remaining veterans and burn their camp. Carlson was fatally shot, along with another veteran, William Hushka; several bystanders and family members of veterans were also killed or injured.
