Erath, Louisiana

Erath is a town in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,187 at the 2000 census.

Erath is located at GR1.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,187 people, 819 households, and 580 families residing in the town. The population density was 562.9/km² (1,453.7/mi²). There were 887 housing units at an average density of 228.3/km² (589.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 89.12% White, 6.22% African American, 0.18% Native American, 3.52% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.69% of the population.
There were 819 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 83.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,386, and the median income for a family was $36,204. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $19,118 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,327. About 15.5% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.0% of those under age 18 and 24.7% of those age 65 or over.

Henry Hub is an important junctioning of natural gas pipeline systems located in Erath. Natural gas prices in North America are more or less set at Henry Hub.
[edit] Hurricane Rita
In 2005, the storm surge forced inland by Hurricane Rita flooded most of the town. Water in many parts of town was up to four feet deep.

The extensive storm surge damage was caused because there is no more leeve on the intracoastal canal and all of the reefs have been dredged from the outside of vermilion bay, this is what protected towns like Erath and delcambre from the strom surge that hurricane's bring.
