Erastus Root

Erastus Root was an American politician from New York.

Born in Hebron, Connecticut on March 16, 1773. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1793 and returned to Hebron to practice law. Three years after his graduation, in 1796, Root relocated to Delhi, New York and opened a law practice there. A Clinton Democrat, Root served in the New York State Assembly from 1798 until 1802, in the New York State Senate from 1840 to 1844, and in the United States House of Representatives in the 8th, 11th, 13th, and 22nd Congresses. Root was also Lieutenant Governor of New York under Joseph C. Yates, and served for many years as Major-General of the New York State Militia.[1]
