Equestrian at the 1900 Summer Olympics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the 1900 Summer Olympics, five equestrian events were contested. Only three are currently considered Olympic by the International Olympic Committee. It is not certain how many competitors there were, but it is likely that there were between 37 and 64[1]. Calculation of number of competitors is complicated by the fact that a rider might enter an event multiple times on different horses. Five nations competed in the Olympic events, with three more (Germany, Spain, and Austria) in the non-Olympic competitions. There was a female rider, Elvira Guerra, but she competed only in the non-Olympic hacks and hunter combined event.

[edit] Jumping
The jumping event in 1900 was similar to the modern event. The course was 850 metres long with 22 jumps, including a double jump and a triple jump as well as a 4-metre water jump. 45 competitors entered, though only 37 competed. Some information is known on 10 of the competitors, though of the rest all that can be deduced from the nationalities of the entrants is that, of the remaining unknowns that did compete, at most 1 was a Russian, up to 3 were Italian, at least 3 and up to 9 were Belgian, and between 14 and 20 were French.

[edit] Non-Olympic events
Mallon and de Wael have both included these events in their Olympic lists; however, those lists were created before the International Olympic Committee had made a decisive ruling on which events and sports at the 1900 and 1904 Summer Olympics were truly Olympic. The IOC does not list the winners of the hacks and hunter combined event or the mail coach event as medallists in its results database.
[edit] Hacks and hunter combined
It is unknown how many riders competed in the hacks and hunter combined. The top four placers are known, as are eight more riders who also competed (including one woman). As an upper limit, 50 men and 1 woman are listed as entrants in the Official Report, but it is almost certain that not all actually competed.
Place | Rider | Nation | Horse |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Napolêon Murat | France | The General |
2 | Archenoul | France | Retournelle |
3 | de Montesquiou-Féznesac | France | Grey Leg |
[edit] Mail coach
31 entrants are listed for the mail coach event; all 29 of the riders are known by name (2 entered twice each). Beyond the top four competitors, it is unknown how many of the 31 entrants actually competed.
Place | Rider | Nation |
---|---|---|
1 | Georges Nackelmackers | Belgium |
2 | Léon Thome | France |
3 | Baron de Neuflize | France |
[edit] Notes
- ^ Mallon has 47 known competitors, giving no estimate for unknowns. Most of the known competitors are in the non-Olympic mail coach event. De Wael claims 16 unknowns and adds a 48th name to the known list, for a total of 64. Both sources include all five events, rather than merely the three the IOC has designated Olympic.
- ^ That Jéhin rode Bistouri, a horse which he owned, is presumed by de Wael.
- ^ De Wael notes that it is uncertain if Murat actually was the rider, but argues for it on the basis that Murat was the owner of Arcadius and is known to have ridden in other events
