From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Oaks Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for three-year-old thoroughbred fillies run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 metres) at Epsom Downs in early June. It is one of five United Kingdom Classic Races.
The race is named after the Earl of Derby's estate "The Oaks" in Carshalton, about 4 miles to the east of Epsom Downs. At a dinner party held there the Earl and his friends planned a sweepstake for three-year-old fillies over a distance of one and a half miles (2,414 metres) and this was first run the following year 1779 and won by the Earl's own horse Bridget. The race has been named thus since.
[edit] Trivia
- 1848 The largest ever field for the race - 26 runners.
- 1904 Pretty Polly won the race at odds of 8/100 - the shortest-priced winner in the history of this or any other classic race.
- 1904 Pretty Polly's race also equalled the record set in 1799 for the smallest ever field in the Oaks - 4 runners.
- 1908 Signorinetta is the most recent of three fillies to win both the Oaks and the Derby at Epsom.
- 1911 Cherimoya never raced before or after winning the Oaks.
- 1916 Fifinella won both the Oaks and the Derby at Newmarket, where the races were transferred during World War I.
- 1977 Dunfermline, owned by Queen Elizabeth II, won the race at the height of the celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
- 1983 Sun Princess won by 12 lengths - the widest winning margin in the race's history.
- 1989 Snow Bride was promoted to 1st after the original winner Aliysa tested positive for a banned substance. Following an unsuccessful appeal against the disqualification, Aliysa's owner Aga Khan IV withdrew all his horses from the UK in late 1990, not returning until 1996.
- 1991 Jet Ski Lady won the race at odds of 50/1, equalling Vespa's odds in 1833 - the longest-priced winners in the race's history.
- 1993 Intrepidity set the record for the fastest ever time in the race - 2m 34.19s.
- 2001 The 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the race were all daughters of the stallion Sadler's Wells. His son Galileo won the Derby the following day.
