[edit] History

The school was founded in 1974 in two rooms in St. Michael and All Angel's School. It has occupied a large campus in North Dallas since the late 1970's. The school originally only offered enrollment to grades 5 through 12. In 1995 it merged with St. Michael and now offers grades pre-kindergarten through 12.

The Reverend Stephen B. Swann is the founding and current headmaster of the school.

[edit] Campus

ESD, located on three campuses, continues to develop, currently with 248,000 sq.ft. in facilities. The campus housing the Middle and Upper Schools is a former limestone quarry located on Midway Road. The first building, the gymnasium, was completed in the late 1970's. Classes were held in the gym until the main building was finished in 1981. A major expansion of the main building was completed in 1986. This expansion included a library, publication suite, fine arts facilities, classrooms and offices. The Cook Math and Science building was completed in 1994. It houses the science labs, math classrooms and two computer labs. All Saints Chapel was opened in 2003; previously, daily chapel had been held in the gym. The Frank Arts and Humanities Building opened in 2005. In addition to humanities classrooms and expanded music facilities, it offers a state-of-the-art proscenium theater, a black box theater, ceramic studio, and a darkroom/digital imaging suite. The latest additions to the Merrell Road campus are a 55,000 sq. ft. center for arts and humanities and a new stadium complete with state-of-the-art athletic turf, locker rooms, and accommodations for home and visiting fans. The Lower, Middle and Upper School campuses are located in the Preston Hollow-area. The Merrell Road campus spans more than 39 acres. ESD's rural outdoor education center, located in northern Collin County, is comprised of 165 acres. The Episcopal School of Dallas is also one of the most expensive college-prep schools in the state of Texas.

Grades pre-k through 4 are still housed in leased space at the St. Michael campus.

The school has a 165 acre outdoor education center, Wolf Run, near Anna, Texas. Although it is a wonderful school, it is extremely expensive, so before you enroll your children make sure you are rich.

[edit] Students

ESD has an enrollment of more than 1100 students, including nearly 400 in the Upper School (grades 9 through 12). The school accepts students from a variety of faiths and backgrounds, but with moderation as to not present a threat to the majority. While most students are college-bound, they represent a range of aptitudes and skills. Graduates attend a variety of prestigious universities across the nation. Graduates of the 2005-2006 class went to universities such as University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, Stanford University, University of Texas at Austin Plan II, Pomona College, University of Alabama, and the University of Virginia.

[edit] Faculty

The Upper School has 65 full-time faculty members, 57 of whom have master's degrees. Of these, 4 also have doctorates, and 3 are doctoral candidates.

[edit] Stephen B. Swann

The Reverend Stephen B. Swann is the founding Rector and Headmaster of the Episcopal School of Dallas. He has been a member of the School's Board of Directors since its inception in 1974.
