Envirothon

The Envirothon is a nationwide high school environmental competition in the United States and in Canada wherein teams of five students are tested on five categories: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils/Land Use, Wildlife, and a rotating current environmental issue. The 2007 environmental issue is "Alternative/Renewable Energy."

Provinces and states across Canada and the United States each have their own competitions from which the champion team earns the privilege of representing their state/province at the Canon Envirothon competition, which will be held in New York in 2007. In areas with a considerable amount of teams, regional and district competitions are also held. Teams must win the regional or district competitions in order to move on to the state or national levels.

During the competition, each team must write five tests and also must prepare an oral pesentation on the current rotating topic which the team will present to a panel of judges. Each test is scored out of 100 points and the presentation is scored out of 200 points. The team with the highest cumulative points at the end of the scoring is the winning team. Recognition is also given to teams with the highest scoring in each of the categories.

The current champion of the Canon Envirothon is from Virginia. Winners from the Virginia team include Kate Abshire, Ryan Bugass, Ali Fitzgerald, Whitney Hawkins, and Robert Michaels. The 2006 rotating issue was "Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate," relating to the effects of global warming.
