Enrique Fernando

Enrique Fernando (July 24, 1915 - October 13, 2004) was the Chief Justice of the Philippines from 1979 to 1985.
He graduated his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines, magna cum laude, 1938. He later had a Law partnership with Lorenzo Tanada, in which they both have a book on the Philippine Constitution in thier name. He was appointed Associate justice on June 30, 1967. He became Chief Justice upon the death of Fred Ruiz Castro, who died.
He is a law professor and an authority in constitutional law, specializing in individual liberties of persons. However, some were dismayed when he uphold some of Marco's policy via its decisions. Nevertheless, he made some important decisions which uphold the rights ofindividual liberties, such as the right to travel and custodial investigation.
The media also played up his support of the Marcos regime when he was caught on camera holding an umbrella to the then First Lady Imelda Marcos. While it would seem an act of chivalry, many considered it inappropriate for a Chief Justice.

His decisions can be easily grasped, as he would put a brief synopsis of the case in the first paragraph of his ponencias.
It was during his term that the "Legitimizing" power of the Supreme Court was made in full use to uphold the policies of the Marcos administration.
