English cricket in the 18th century

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article provides an introduction to the more specific articles that cover the history of English cricket until 1815.

Cricket enjoyed continuous development until 1810, after which it was severely disrupted by the Napoleonic War until 1815 when a slow recovery began, so the term 18th Century is here used to cover the whole period from the first recorded "great match" in 1697 until the end of the Napoleonic War in 1815.

For cricket in 1816 onwards, see English cricket from 1816 to 1918.

Details were sparse at the beginning of the 18th Century and so the first 25 years are covered by one article: History of cricket 1697 - 1725.

From 1726 onwards, newspaper reports about cricket became more common and gradually provided more detail. The article called History of cricket 1726 - 1815 is a general overview of the period but contains within it a table of links to each season.
