Schulich School of Engineering has one of the largest Engineering Internship Program in Canada. Typically over 300 students participate in the program every year. Engineering Internship Program (EIP) at the Faculty of Engineering was started in 1993 by Dean Dr. Ted Rhodes with Dr. M.A.Ward as the founding Director. Dr. Michael Ward, a civil engineer, was the former Vice-president of the Research at the University of Calgary. Nima Dorjee, P.Eng., is the current Director of the program. EIP is a founding member of Canadian Association of Internship Program (CAFIP).
The Engineering Internship Program is 12 to 16 months of paid work experience after the third year of engineering studies. Students in the Internship program follow five year engineering degree program. Interns graduate with Internship Designation and up to one year of internship experience recognized by APEGGA.
Typical salary for an intern is around $40,000 per year (70 to 80% of a new graduate salary).
The Engineering Internship Program's success was recognized nationally by the Ontario based Yves Landry Foundation as the "Outstanding Technical Co-operative Education Program" (University category) for 2002 in Canada.
