The Encyclopedia of Life Sciences is an encyclopedia of biology published in paper and online by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

ELS has both a 20-volume print edition and an online edition. The online edition was launched in April 2001, with the print edition appearing in January 2002. At the end of 2004 ELS was acquired by John Wiley & Sons from the Nature Publishing Group.
Articles are written by academics in their respective fields. As of October 2006, it contained almost 4000 articles. In addition, articles have also been added from the Nature Encyclopedia of the Human Genome (EHG), available online for the first time.
Full access requires a subscription, though free sample articles are available.
Articles are of three levels:
- Introductory Articles are aimed at the level of British university undergraduates, American college freshmen/sophomores and non-specialist readers.
- Advanced Articles are aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduates and researchers.
- Keynote Articles are written from a personal point of view and discuss unique and often controversial topics of special interest in biology.
