Template talk:En icon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Should this template be used for links here on the English-language Wpedia? It seems to me that "en" ought to be default, and only other languages marked. —Ashley Y 00:27, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it does not hurt I believe. It might be useful to point out English material among sources in other languages. --Orzetto 11:05, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

- It was downgraded by User:Easyas12c on December 20th, 2005, probably to make all language icons in the same design. I agree, they should have kept the initial look as a standard. Unless it's been discussed somewhere, there is no reason why we shouldn't ask an admin to revert them all. However, it's quite a job, considering the number of templates to change... Not using this on EN would reduce the clutter and make the non-English links stand out better. In addition, the image server is often a bottleneck, so 'nice to have' images chain template calls that don't actually contribute to the encyclopedia's content seem like a luxury better spent elsewhere. Plus, unless they are {subst:}'d, the template calls are a further hit on the server resources. 24.18.215.132 01:13, 11 May 2006 (UTC) rv 24.18.215.132 01:25, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- I strongly agree. See Venezuela#External links to see how confusing it can be. It's very hard to distinguish between spanish and english in that list.
- Does this need to be put through TfD? Or even just add a "This template is deprecated on the English Wikipedia" note underneath it? --Quiddity 20:23, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
I don't think advisable to use the template unless it's necessary. But there are a few places where the title of an external link could lead to think that the site is in a foreign language, especially when placed amongst a certain number of foreign sites or inside an article relating to foreign subjects. Furthermore, it should never be deleted for compatibility with bots from other wikis that often use the english wiki as a point of reference for interwikis. [edit] Interwikis
Please remove [[no:Mal:En]] from the list of interwikis. In norwegian, the template has a totally different purpose. Robin des Bois ♘ ➳ ✉ 03:58, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- Done. Sandstein 06:46, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- And sl: should be changed to sl:Predloga:Ikona en for the same reason. zh-classical:Template:En should also be added in the list. Sorry for not doing them all at the same time. Robin des Bois ♘ ➳ ✉ 23:04, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
I've created a documentation subpage at Template:En icon/doc so people can change the interwikis without asking for admin assistance. - BanyanTree 18:52, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
