Empress of Russia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Empress of Russia was a Canadian Pacific Steamship launched on 1912-08-28. On her maiden voyage she sailed to Hong Kong via Suez. She then went on transpacific duty to Vancouver. She was requisitioned twice during World War I, first serving as an armed merchantman in the Philippines, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, and in the second instance as a troop transport for American troops. Between the wars she resumed her transpacific duties until she was again requisitioned as a troop transport and in similar duties. During her refitting to bring Canadian troops home she was destroyed by fire on 1945-09-08 at Barrow, and subsequently demolished.
