Emporium, Pennsylvania

Emporium is a borough in Cameron County, Pennsylvania, 100 miles (161 km) west-northwest of Williamsport. Early in the twentieth century, it had large powder plants and manufactories of radio tubes, incandescent lamps, paving brick, flour, iron, lumber, sole leather, etc. In 1900, 2,463 people lived in Emporium, and in 1910, 2,916 people called it home. The population was 2,526 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cameron CountyGR6.

Emporium is located at 41°30′41″N, 78°14′11″W (41.511288, -78.236418)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,526 people, 1,089 households, and 626 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,336.0/km² (3,460.2/mi²). There were 1,215 housing units at an average density of 642.6/km² (1,664.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.38% White, 0.71% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population.

There were 1,089 households out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.1% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% were non-families. 38.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the borough the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $28,618, and the median income for a family was $37,610. Males had a median income of $30,461 versus $25,087 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,239. About 8.2% of families and 12.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.9% of those under age 18 and 12.7% of those age 65 or over.
