Empiricism is Borknagar's fifth studio album, and their first studio album to feature Vintersorg (known for the band of the same name) on vocals.
Empiricism was recorded at Fagerborg Studio and Toproom Studio during June and July 2001, and was mixed and produced by the band and Børge Finstad.
The album showed a more traditional folkish, more melodic approach compared to the previous year's Quintessence album's black metal elements. Black metal influences remain, but they are not so prominent.
