Emperor Velo XXVII (ベロ皇帝27世 Bero Kōtei 27 Sei?) (sometimes simply "Velo") is a fictional video game character from the Crash Bandicoot series, and the main antagonist of Crash Nitro Kart.

Velo is the extraterrestrial emperor of an unnamed empire and a fanatic racer and egotist combined. He speaks about himself as "the most accomplished racer in the entire galaxy." However, this is deflected through his defeat against Crash and Cortex, whom he kidnapped in order to prove his strength.

[edit] Personality and appearance

Velo is an individual of sadistic and narcissistic tendencies. He cares only for entertainment, and lacks any empathy whatsoever, bursting out at anyone who gets on his bad side,[1] and taking pleasure in the hardships of others,[2] most of which are punishments personally inflicted by Velo to subjects who have failed him. He claims that he's the most accomplished racer in the entire galaxy, and that he has never lost a single race.[3] In fact, he is so bent on proving that he is the fastest of them all, that he is willing to kidnap seasoned veteran racers (such as Crash and the gang) from different worlds just to do it, usually threatening to destroy their world if they do not race.[4] In a way, he is very similar to Nitros Oxide of Crash Team Racing, an extraterrestrial who also attempted to destroy the world in a race (ironically, Oxide is seen serving under Velo in Crash Nitro Kart).

Velo is a very tall and obese character, and is never seen walking throughout the entire game (his full body isn't seen until after Geary's defeat). He is an overall vibrantly-colored individual, with light-green skin, pink clothing, blue lip, purple V-shaped goatee, and gold jewelry.

[edit] History

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Velo is an apparently powerful emperor, with thousands of subjects (all of them resembling small goblins) at his beck and call, and a Coliseum at the top of his planet (which resembles his head, reflecting his large ego). His subjects are in constant need of entertainment, and when legends of the driving skills of Crash and his friends reach his ears, he immediately abducts Crash and the others and forces them to race in his Galaxy Circuit, with the threat of the destruction of Earth of they do not race.[5] When Velo's subjects are defeated one by one, Velo reveals himself to be the Galactic Champion, and races the Earthlings personally. Upon his defeat, Velo throws a fit, when suddenly he explodes. The Velo the Earthlings raced was just a robotic suit, much to the shock of Velo's subjects.[6][7] The real Velo, as it turns out, is actually a small goblin, much like his subjects. In Crash's ending, Velo holds up his scepter in triumph in an attempt to win over his subjects, but they are too shocked and let down to say anything. Powerless, Velo relinquishes his empire and whatever influence he had on his subjects.[8] Crash seriously considers this (even thinking about having the planet shaped into his head), but decides to reject the idea, and gives the scepter back to Velo. In Cortex's ending, Velo isn't so willing to give up his power. When he sees Cortex with his scepter, he tackles him in an attempt to get it back, but is easily stopped by Tiny, forcing Velo to give them the scepter.[9]

[edit] Other information

  • Velo's name is one of different origins. "Velo" is the Spanish word for "veil", as in a disguise or mask, referring to the fact that the Velo the heroes meet at first is just a robotic suit hiding the real Velo. "Velo" is also the French word for "bicycle", a mode of transportation, referring to Velo's title as the most accomplished racer in the galaxy. Lastly, "Velo" could also be a pun on the English word "velocity", which is another term for speed, again referring to Velo's racing title.
