Emory Erickson

In "Star Trek" chronology, Emory Erickson is the inventor of the transporter. He appears in one episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise," in which he is played by Bill Cobbs.
Erickson's early attempts at inventing the transporter did not go well; he used himself as a test subject, and sustained serious injuries as a result. Erickson's son, Quinn, vanished altogether while testing the device. Eventually, Erickson attempted to enlist the aid of Captain Jonathan Archer and the crew of the NX-01 Enterprise, on the pretext that Erickson had invented an extremely long-range transporter that could obviate the need for starships entirely.
However, this was all a smokescreen, a coverup for Erickson's true motive: recovering Quinn. After locating the region of space in which Quinn had vanished, Erickson was able to locate and recover his son, who died shortly afterward.
