[edit] Australian Idol
Formerly a forklift truck operator in a factory, Williams auditioned for the 2005 season of Australian Idol. She advanced through to the top 30, and then the judges put her through to the top 12 in the Wildcard Show. She sang "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen for the top 10 live performance show, the judges agreeing this was the best performance of the night. She scored three of Mark Holden's "touchdown"s. One for her performance of "River Deep, Mountain High" by Ike & Tina Turner for the Motown themed show and for her performance of "All The Way" by Frank Sinatra on Big Band Night and lastly for "I'm Every Woman" by "Chaka Khan" for the 1970s-themed show.
She was voted by the public into the top 2 along with fellow top 12 contestant Kate DeAraugo. Williams lost in the closest percentage in a Australian Idol Grand Finale. Its been announced 5 minutes before the results that only 1% of votes separated DeAraugo and Williams, so Williams actually secured 49.5% of all votes.[citation needed]

[edit] Post-Idol
After her loss to Kate DeAraugo on Australian Idol, Williams' fans demanded that she be signed to a record label, on a forum dedicated to the singer. They were especially heated after Lee Harding, who came third on the third season of Australian Idol, was signed and had already released his debut single. On December 19, 2005 it was confirmed that Williams had been signed with Sony BMG.
Emily Williams features as one of the Young Divas with fellow Australian Idol contestants, Kate DeAraugo, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Paulini Curuenavuli. They released a cover version of the Donna Summer, Stock, Aitken and Waterman song, "This Time I Know It's for Real", on 6 May 2006 before commencing a national concert tour. The single reached number two on the Australian ARIA charts, and its popularity led to the release of another Stock, Aitken Waterman song "Happenin' All over Again", which was previously a hit for Lonnie Gordon. An album was released in November 2006 and has now reached platinum accreditation on the Australian ARIA charts within two weeks of release. When the album was re-released on the 11 December 2006, it included an extra track, "I Will Always Love You", by Emily Williams.
