Elvira (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Elvira" was the title of a 1970 song performed by Kenny Rogers, written by Dallas Frazier. .

It was covered in 1981 and was a #1 country music hit single for the Oak Ridge Boys. It appeared on the group's 1981 album, Fancy Free.

It remains the group's most widely known song, crossing over as a #5 pop hit, Rogers version also remains popular, having been included on a multi-million selling Greatest Hits collection (despite the fact he only recorded it as an album track at the time).

Many falsely believe that the song was in tribute to Cassandra Peterson's role of Elvira. In fact the original song was written before Peterson created the Elvira character. (However, Cassandra has indeed jokingly defended the claim that the song was, in fact, written for her.)

One of the most well-known features of the Oak Ridge Boys' version is Richard Sterban's deep voiced vocals on the chorus ("ba-oom papa oom papa mow mow").
