Elvington, Kent

Elvington is a small pit village in between Canterbury and Dover located near to the nearby settlement of Eythorne. The village lies on a ridge and offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside from Terrace Road and Roman Way.
The village was mostly built in the early 20th Century to serve the nearby pit at Tilmanstone - there are other villages in the area much the same including Sandown, Aylesham and Betteshanger. Today the pit is an industrial estate between Tilmanstone and Eythorne located on the Pike Road.
The new housing estate was built originally in the mid 1990s and has been extensively added to since however some areas of the estate were built much earlier possibly being Beech Grove.
Recent investment from agencies such as SEEDA has led to the development of the former miners hall into a communication and learning centre for the village. They are numerous local activities within the village community centre as well in the future to open a long distance footpath throughout the mining villages called the Miners Way.
Apparently the Romans once marched through this area of Kent using the Ashey path to Barfrestone and the Roman Path across the downs and along what is now Roman Way, hence the name.
Terrace Road overlooks the school of Eythorne, Elvington originally called Elvington School in the 1920s. It is located in Eythorne according to their address however the area is actually Lower Eythorne but with the nearby Elvington house some debate has ensued as to whether this area is actually part of Elvington.
Services today include a Community/Learning Centre, School, Post Office, Village Shop, hairdressers and takeaway shop as well as local information centre providing access to training and employment for local residents.
Walks in the area are worth it to enjoy the splendid views. Elvington is so called because (apparently) a manor or farm called Elvington manor once stood where the bowling club now is which can be seen from Terrace Road.
