The Elmira Jackals are an ice hockey team in the United Hockey League since the 2000-2001 season. Their home games are played in First Arena in Elmira, New York and they refer to themselves as "the beasts of the east". Their mascot is named Blade. They've already had some success in their short history, playing for the Colonial Cup (hockey) in 2002 and 2004 as the Eastern Conference champions. Originally, they were affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL, but are now an independent operation.
[edit] The 2006-2007 Season
The season promised to be a hard-hitting one, as the Jackals signed tough guys Frank Littlejohn, Curtis Tidball and Brendan Tedstone (no longer on active roster) during the off season. Also joining the Jackals is perennial UHL All-Star defenseman Scott Drevitch. But as hard as they hit, they had a rough season full of losses and coaching changes.
Elmira had hired former Flint Generals tough guy Kris Waltze as the head coach to start the year. He coached the now defunct Richmond RiverDogs through the second half of the previous season. As early as December 20th though, he'd be replaced by current GM Robbie Nichols. By February 8th, Nichols would resign from coaching duties due to health issues and be replaced by Paul Gillis, with Kris Waltze continuing as the assistant coach.
