Hey Steve, just a few comments.

  1. Eli is Hebrew as well as Aramaic.
  2. It is derived from El, a Canaanite storm god.
  3. The "i" suffix indicates first person singular possession, i.e., "my El".
  4. Eli is also a common first name in Hebrew, however, there is a distinction between Eli spelled with an aleph, which is a diminutive form of Eliahu (Elijah), Eliezer, etc. and Eli spelled with an 'ayin, which is the name of the high priest in the Book of Samuel.
