Elizabeth How-Martyn
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edith How-Martyn also known as Elizabeth How-Martyn (1875-1954) was a British suffragette and a member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). She was arrested in 1906 for attempting to make a speech in the House of Commons. This was one of the first acts of suffragette militancy.
How-Martyn was one of the women to break away from the WSPU, angry that the organisation was being run in a dictatorial manner by its leader Emmeline Pankhurst. How-Martyn was one of the founder members of the Women's Freedom League in 1907.
How-Martyn stood as a Feminist candidate at the 1918 General Election, however she was unsuccessful and lost her deposit.
