Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School is a large comprehensive secondary school for girls in Islington, London. It is classified as a language college. It is named in honour of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman to gain a medical qualification in the United Kingdom.

EGA’s buildings are also named after great women in history, for example: Frida Kahlo (the art department), Emily Bronte (Humanities, English and Mathematics) and Mary Seacole (Languages).

[edit] Staff

The popular headmistress, Ms Coughlin, left in 2005 and has been replaced by Ms Jo Dibb. A general re-shuffle of the school hierarchy was needed because many teachers were ‘asked’ to leave, because of financial issues, in 2004.

[edit] Lessons

Currently there are six lessons a day along with a seventh period if needed by the students for extra lessons/languages.

Of course, being a Language College, students are encouraged to take at least one language alongside English, Mathematics, English, and Science are compulsory at GCSE level, along with choices.
