Elizabeth Ann Duke (born November 25, 1940) is a former American teacher, philanthropist,[citation needed] and militant fugitive best known for her involvement an armed communist group which advocated violent overthrow of the U.S. government, and subsequent flight from prosecution. She is currently wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
Duke was born in Beeville, Texas on November 25, 1940 but given her date of birth as April 20, 1941. Duke was reportedly a member of a now-defunct Weathermen splinter group, the May 19th Communist Movement (also known as the Armed Revolutionary Unit or Red Guerrilla Resistance). The group claimed responsibility for a series of bombings of U.S. government buildings between 1983 and 1985, including the bombing of the United States Capitol building in November 1983.
Duke, along with her accomplice Alan Berkman, was arrested in May 1985 and indicted by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on conspiracy and weapons charges, she was released on bail in July 1985. In October 1985, Duke skipped bail.
Duke is wanted on several charges, including unlawful possession of United States identification; conspiracy; unlawful storage of explosives; unlawful possession of firearms and destructive devices (including a submachine gun, dynamite, and other bomb components); storage and concealment of stolen explosives; unlawful possession of five or more false identification documents; possession of counterfeit Social Security cards; aiding and abetting; and unlawful possession of document-making implement. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading directly to Duke's arrest and conviction.
The FBI gives Duke's personal information as being 5'6" (1 m, 65 cm) tall, weighing an estimated 120 pounds (58 kg), and having blue-green eyes and brown hair that may now be gray. Duke has pinholes on the front of her earlobes due to a genetic disorder. Duke is known to speak fluent Spanish. She has ties to Texas and has been known to travel in the northern United States near the Canada-United States border.
Duke has been connected to Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mexico, and Spain. The FBI is seeking her arrest and/or extradition, and considers her armed and dangerous. Duke has used several aliases, including Betty Ann Duke, Elizabeth Ann Duke, Betty Weir, and Betty Ann. Her National Crime Information Center number is W502404799.
