Eliwood (エリウッド Eriuddo) is a fictional character in the video game Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken (Blazing Sword), the first Fire Emblem game to be released outside Japan.

[edit] Character history

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Eliwood of Pherae is a talented swordsman on a quest to find his father, Elbert, who had been kidnapped by the Dark Druid Nergal. As he and his group (initially formed by the tactician, the Paladin Marcus, the Cavalier Lowen, the archer Rebecca and the axefighters Bartre and Dorcas) travel through Lycia, they see that Elbert's disappearance is part of a much bigger conspiracy lead by Nergal and his group, the Black Fang.

Eliwood eventually finds his father at the Dragon's Gate on Valor a mysterious island, but arrives too late as a dancer named Ninian, under the control of Nergal, helps to kill Elbert at the end of Chapter 19. Elbert dies in Eliwood's arms, Ninian is brought back to her senses by her brother Nils, Eliwood's group leaves the island and they re-organize in the continent, continuing the fight against the Black Fang.

Eliwood also appears in Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi as the father of Roy, but only through a very short period into the game.

[edit] Statistics

Eliwood's statistics are average all-around, but his luck is higher than the rest. Often, he tends to be somewhat lopsided, or weak in his statistics, having no real specialties (or weaknesses). Because his statistical growths are often average, he tends to lack in certain areas at some times, while in other areas at another. Nevertheless, he has a great amount of potential, and is a solid unit. He class-changes from Lord to Knight Lord via story event (his story) or the Heavens Seal item (Hector's story), this turns him into a mounted unit with the ability to use lances along with swords.

Eliwood is equipped with a rapier, and later, the Durandal, (which increases Eliwood's strength by 5 when equipped), which he uses to battle Nergal and the Fire Dragon.

[edit] Relationships

Eliwood's mother is the bishop Eleanora, who is guarded by the paladin Isadora, a playable character. He is the father of Roy, who first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee in order to promote his "actual" appearance, in Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi. Fūin no Tsurugi was actually made and released before Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword, which is Eliwood's game

During Lyndis's quest (placed one year before Eliwood's), he helps Lyn prove herself as the rightful heir to the throne of Caelin, another Lycian territory. It is possible that he has feelings for her, implied in a conversation between him and his friend Hector in Chapter 13x. Lyn sees him not only as a good sparring partner, but as someone she can ask for advice when it comes to Lycia and etiquette, which is hard for her to attain since she was raised in the plains of Sacae.

Despite this, Eliwood also develops feelings for Ninian, the dancer of the group, and their relationship ends up flourishing even if you do not get their support conversations. Eliwood clearly has a crush on Ninian and tries to help her get over her guilt after Elbert's death; she returns his feelings, but is afraid to show them openly since she has a big secret to hide... she's not fully human, but the daughter of a human man and a female dragon, and after living for centuries with her brother Nils in another world, they passed through the Dragon's Gate to see their beloved homeland for one last time. Eventually, after offering herself in exchange for Nils' safety, Ninian is forcefully back to her dragon form... and ends up slain by Eliwood, who doesn't know of this and has just unlocked the Durandal, a weapon made to kill dragons. She dies in Eliwood's arms, begging him to protect Elibe from Nergal.

Eliwood is also protective of the Pegasus Knight Fiora, the tormented older sister of Lyn's partner Florina. She's in the verge of being crushed under her own responsibilities and ghosts, and Eliwood helps her to work through them.

Depending on who he has max (A grade) support with, he will either marry Lyndis, Fiora or Ninian.

In any case, a support conversation between Marcus and Lilina in Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals Marcus tells Lilina that Roy's mother had a favorite flower which grew only in the snowy highlands; all three women (Lyn,Ninian, and Fiora) have connectios to Ilia. Both Fiora and Ninian were raised in Ilia, but Lyn's best friend is from Ilia and indicates that Florina would bring a "present" with her to visits.

Spoilers end here.
