Electoral district of Mitchell (South Australia)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mitchell is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the state of South Australia. It was first created in 1969 and is named after philosopher Sir William Mitchell. Mitchell is located in inner-south eastern Adelaide, covering 26.6 km² and encompassing the suburbs of Sheidow Park, Trott Park, Old Reynella, Seaview Downs, Dover Gardens, Seacombe Heights, Seacombe Gardens and Sturt. It also includes parts of Darlington, Bedford Park, Clovelly Park, Mitchell Park, Marion, Oaklands Park and Warradale.
Mitchell has tended to be a marginal Labor-held seat, and has been held by the party for all but six years since its creation. While Colin Caudell succeeded in winning the seat for the Liberal Party of Australia in 1993, he was narrowly defeated by current member Kris Hanna in 1997 with the help of Australian Democrats preferences. Hanna markedly increased his majority at the 2002 election, but defected to the Greens in 2003. He subsequently left the Greens on 8th February 2006.
Kris Hanna was successfully re-elected as an Independent at 2006 South Australian elections in a close contest with the Labor candidate that left the electorate of Mitchell in doubt for a week after the election. Hanna ultimately won by 228 votes after preferences. [1]
Travis Gilbert was an unsuccessful independent green candidate at the 2006 election who ran as direct opposition to Kris Hanna, citing that Hanna had betrayed his supporters and the electorate, by joining then leaving the SA Greens and then becoming independent, whilst still siding with the ALP on almost all policy.
