El Gorah

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

El Gorah is a locale in northeastern Sinai, in Egypt, approximately 16 kilometers from the Israeli border. It is sparsely populated by nomads and by farmers who tend small orchards.

It is the location of a former Israeli air base which controlled the northern Sinai from 1967 to 1979. It is currently the location of the Headquarters of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) international peacekeeping force, called MFO North Camp.

The name "El Gorah" means "The Grave" in Egyptian Arabic. MFO personnel stationed there when visiting Egyptian tourism sites have occasionally drawn stares from the locals when asked where they live when they respond, "El Gorah!"

North Camp in El Gorah was the victim of a horrific string of Joseph and Mary robberies during the Christmas of 2005. The culprit was never caught but the message "No one cares I work in the tool room" was found at the scene.
