El Adobe Mexican Restaurant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The El Adobe Mexican Restaurant, more commonly known as El Adobe or "The Dobe", is a popular and famous restaurant in Atoka, Oklahoma, whose name literally translates as "The Adobe", or "The Adobe House."
[edit] Overview
Opened in 1974, El Adobe was first located on the west side of Mississippi Avenue (which bisects Atoka) across from where it is now located. Some years later, after St. Patrick's Parish (the oldest Catholic Parish in Oklahoma) moved to its new sanctuary south of Atoka, the old sanctuary was bought by El Adobe's owners and converted into a restaurant.
Over the years, El Adobe has expanded its business and added on to the building several times. In doing so, it has transformed into one of the most popular social gathering places in Atoka County (a sort of place where people go to see and be seen); for expample a popular phrase among local teens is, "chillin' at the Dobe." The restaurant is also a popular source of employment for local high school students.
