Ekadashi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hindu Vaishnavas observe Ekadashi (alternatively called 'Gyaars') by fasting on that day. Ekadashi itself is a combination of 'Eka' (One) and 'Dashi' (Ten), meaning the eleventh day after the full or new moon. Gyaars comes from the Hindi word 'gyaarah' which means 11. The moon influences the tides, and also the moods of man.
It is a bimonthly occasion that is mainly observed by Vaishnavas, although its observance is also open to followers of non-Vaishnava traditions. On the Ekadashi day strict fasting is observed from all grains, beans, cereals and certain vegetables and spices.
