Eighth Street Apartments
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eighth Street Apartments is an apartment complex on the Georgia Institute of Technology's west campus. It is situated behind the Paper Institute and adjacent to Hemphill Apartments.[1] Aside from the Undergraduate Living Center, Eighth Street Apartments has the most undergraduate students living in apartments on the school campus.[citation needed]
It was built shortly before the 1996 Summer Olympics. Draper & Associates provided scheduling and project control services for the Eighth Street Student Apartments constructed on the campus. This project included three five-story buildings with a total of 235,000 square feet built to house approximately 650 students in 166 apartment units.[2]
The structures contain post-tensioned concrete frames, masonry and precast exteriors, and slate roofs. Each apartment and student bedroom was wired with voice, data, and cable television lines, the latter of which are served by GTCN.
Because the project had to be completed in time to house Olympic athletes, Draper & Associates implemented strict project controls and developed an aggressive construction schedule. As a result, the $21.5 million project was completed in only 16 months.[2] The project included a central energy plant to serve a number of west campus buildings.[2]
