Egglescliffe School

Egglescliffe School is a large mixed-sex comprehensive school and sixth form in Eaglescliffe in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees and the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. Beginning as a small rural secondary school of 200 pupils in 1962, Egglescliffe became a comprehensive school in the 1970s, gradually growing to its current size of over 1400 pupils (277 of which are sixth formers). There have been four headteachers who have run the school since it opened: Frank Davison, Mr. Alan Basset, Mr. David Oliver and the current headteacher Mrs. Angela Darnell. The current Chair of Governors is Mr. George Davies. The current Deputy Headteacher is Mr Paul Davison.

Egglescliffe School has held Specialist Arts status since 1999 and was nationally well known for music and orchestral work under the direction of Mr Keith Hewson (Head of Music). The school was featured in an episode of the South Bank Show (19/12/2004, ITV) subtitled a Musical Nation which explored Britain's musical provision for young people. The school also holds accreditations for Sportsmark Extension Award, Artsmark Gold, Beacon School Status, Pathfinder Status for Enterprise Education and Investor in People.

Its 1996, 2000 and 2005 inspection reports were identified in the annual reports of the Chief Inspector of Schools as amongst the best in the country. The 2005 inspection awarded the school the status of Outstanding which lead to a Prime Ministerial visit by Tony Blair (18/11/2005). There is glass case containing his signature in the science block.
