Egan grew up in California on the outskirts of the college town Pomona. At the time of the standoff Egan had been working as a data processor for a health care billing company for the past eight years. At the beginning of the series (i.e. before the bank is robbed) Egan is severely depressed and suicidal. However, because of his actions during the hostage crisis he is hailed as a hero, causing him to feel that he has a "new lease on life".

When he returns to work as a "hero", Egan becomes a more outgoing, assertive person. He buys new clothes and organizes the first meeting for those that were taken hostage.[1][2]. He exercises his assertiveness by sharing his ideas to improve the company he works for. This gains him the admiration of his co-workers, but brings him into conflict with his boss, leading to Egan's firing.

In later episodes, it is revealed that Egan and his wife have never had children, presumably due to fertility issues (the reason is never explicitly stated). As the series progresses, Egan realizes that he and his wife are not happy and in episode four, Egan moves out of the marital home and in with Nick.
