Expert Group 6 (Statistics) (EBES EG6) had been the body that in the '90s developed GESMES (GEneric Statistical MESsage) and other messages (e.g. CLASET) aiming at standardising the exchange of statistics. EG6 was a Group working under the European Board for EDI Standardization (EBES). The work of the EBES EG6 Group was supported to a large extent by the European Commission and the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat). Since 2000 the work on standardising the sharing and exchange of statistics gradually moved under the umbrella of the SDMX initiative.
