[edit] Hotlist

Greetings. Thanks for working on the Hotlist! But it would be more helpful if you would create redirects, instead of changing the links. What I mean is, don't change 14th earl of Home to 14th earl of Home. Instead, make an article called 14th earl of Home that says #Redirect Alec Douglas-Home. That would be a lot more helpful. I'm going to fix the ones you've done so far, so don't worry about those, but it would help if you made redirects from here on.

Thanks! – Quadell (talk) 14:23, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Azara lanceolata.jpg

Could I query why you have tagged Image:Azara lanceolata.jpg as GFDL? I looked over the website it came from, and can find nothing to suggest that it can be copied legally - MPF 23:14, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

I didn't see anything to suggest it can't? Maybe this isn't how it works, I shall check over the pages on licensing explanations (there's a lot of them) again before uploading any more Supergolden 08:39, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks; yes, I'm afraid the mere absence of any copyright notification doesn't mean copyright doesn't exist. Copyright is a complex subject, and generally applies to everything regardless of whether it is stated or not. Freedom to use images can only be taken in very limited cases (such as US Federal Government pics, pics where the photographer specifically releases them, or pics more than I think it's 80 years old). The pages on licensing explanations should say what's what. The other option is to take your own pics and upload them :-) - MPF 09:38, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Request for comment

Is "categorising people by council areas is just a dumb idea on so many levels"?

I don't think so: it is what the other people by nationality cats do, so why is it so "dumb"? This Cfd debate also raises the question: if we Delete this cat, where do we put the people in it? That would be the only part of Scotland not covered by a cat. As it is, these council area categories are really starting to fill out and look good right now: thanks for all your work today.--Mais oui! 22:25, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] North Berwick

Hi,

Nice one for getting involved with the North Berwick page... however, your edit (I think moving the pictures in particular) appears to have caused the contents box and statistics table to overlap. Could be one of those things that looks fine on one comp and weird on another but I think the formatting needs to be redone. Rejig or revert, what do you think? Deiz 18:46, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stratheden

I am annoyed at you completely modifying 'Stratheden'. As a native of Stratheden for my whole life I feel I know more than you. K?

When people come to Stratheden they will be welcomed by gardens of flowers and bright colours as well as lovely views of the tarvit and moat hills, as well as rolling farmland.
This is an example of the unencyclopaedic content I removed from Stratheden. Since you know more than me, please go ahead and add some more informative content to the article. On the other hand, If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed by others, do not submit it. as it says at the bottom of the edit screen. ::Supergolden:: 14:08, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Geological things to do

I was looking at your page and noticed several things that you wanted to sort geologically:

 • Lewisian gneiss - there does indeed seem to be no reference to either this or 'Lewisian'
 • Torridonian sandstone - I have created a redirect page from 'Torridonian Sandstone' (eventually!!) to Torridonian, which exists
 • Moine thrust - this could be redirected to Moine Thrust Belt
 • Highland boundary fault - I note that this does exist where all capitalised i.e. Highland Boundary Fault

Actually, none of the pages are particularly good and need someone with more geological knowledge than I have to improve them but I have learnt quite a bit about Wikipedia in setting up the Redirect (somehow also found myself in Wiki Meta which caused even more confusion!). And at last I understand the capitalisation thing. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to progress!

Hello, Supergolden. You may have noticed User:Tawkerbot2 reverted one or more of your edits and perhaps left a message on your talk page. Wikipedia recently experienced a database malfunction, causing Tawkerbot2 to misidentify legitimate edits; hence the reversion of your edit(s) and the message. [edit] Category:Multiple people

I noticed your recent seperation of our shared article on four women known as Joan of England to four articles. Not a bad move considering there was enough material for this by now. But you might want to check similar shared articles in Category:Multiple people to see if there are other pages demanding your attention. User:Dimadick

[edit] Did you know? prod can have a parameter.

Hello there. You have proposed the article Fifotel for deletion without providing a reason why in the prod template. You may be interested to know that you can add your reasoning like that: Add reason for deletion here. This will make your reasoning show up in the article's deletion notice. It will also aid other users in considering your suggestion on the Proposed Deletions log. See also: How to propose deletion of an article. Sandstein 16:09, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Scotish castles

I see that you tried to create a template about Scotish castles. I had to delete it because it was very misspelled. Try creating it again, and make sure to be very carefull about spelling and punctuation when creating templates, categories and wikilinks. Academic Challenger 08:46, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RE:Earls of Douglas

Thanks for increasing the prosopographic coverage of medieval Scotland. Two things. Firstly, did you use a recent literary source for these articles not in the reference sections? Or can I take it that what's listed in the article reference sections amount to the sum-total of the works consulted? Secondly, do you have any idea why the name "Archibald" came into usage in the Douglas family? This is not crucial, just a matter of personal research interest to myself. The thing is, the name "Archibald" is frequently a translation of the Gaelic name Gilla Epscoip/Gill' Easbaig - modern English, Gillespie - and I'm trying to work out why they did so, since the names, respectively "Follower of the Bishop" and "Really Brave" are not cognate. - Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 13:19, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Goodness! I'm afraid I've no idea. I have been intermittently involved with Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles, transferring articles from the 1911 Britannica onto WP. This was just another gap I spotted, not the result of in depth research. Hopefully I will eventually get around to adding to these articles with a better, more recent source. And thanks for taching me a new word today: I had no idea I was engaged in prosopography! ::Supergolden:: 14:12, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (names and titles)#Ernest Aug. and constibute to the discussion there. [edit] Ashley Fuller

I have removed the prod tag from Ashley Fuller, which you proposed for deletion. I am leaving this message here to notify you about it. Ashley Fuller is a soccer player, in the equivalent of the major league in UK soccer. I wikified the article and made it a stub If you still feel the article should be deleted, please don't add the prod template back to it. Instead, feel free to list the article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks! Mangojuicetalk 19:15, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Covenanters

Thanks for your encouragement. I've now inserted a list of a few secondary references at the bottom of the page. It is fairly eclectic, I'm afraid, but probably covers the main parameters. The problem is that there are literally hundreds of sources for this topic, both primary and secondary. To include them all-or even the most important-would risk oveburdening the article. My own book on the Covenanters (1998) has a reasonable bibliography-though as frontiers are always expanding , it is probably a little dated now. I have not included this book in the list given, though, because I want to avoid any risk of self-promotion. Incidentally, I've taken out the reference to the Reverend Thomas' Tales of the Covenanters because, quite frankly, it's best avoided, as are many others of the same ilk!. Wodrow is included as the best of the works in the traditional school. Much of his interpretation is biased and open to question; but it's a mine of information. I could also supply text references and footnotes; but again this risks overburdenment. Rcpaterson 00:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Union of the Crowns

As my first contact in Wikipedia I turn to you for help. I completely rewrote the piece on the Union of the Crowns because the previous entry was so bad. It is now being corrupted by an eccentric who goes by the name of User:Lord Loxley. I have come across this oddball before and I have no intention of entering into any kind of exchange with him. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. I have raised this also with Dave Souza. RegardsRcpaterson 20:23, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

It's OK, thanks. Cavalry to the rescue. I think you can probably get some sense of what I was up against from the tortured prose below!Rcpaterson 22:07, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't know, Paterson...perhaps you've got this idea that only your favoured perception of history is right or even important enough to discuss. The ability to write a book and have it published in the annals of history, doesn't make you invincible with all that you attempted to cover in the subject-matter. Other people are going to come at things from other perspectives. It's life. Lord Loxley 07:16, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

It was I who made a deal about your plagiaristic prose on that article, but keep throwing these issues back onto me. I only attempted to fix your bloviations, to avoid mock grandeur being taken seriously in an encyclopaedia article. Feel free to write novels in your own free web space, but that is not here. I think that this is a rather important discussion for editors interested in Scotland-related articles, especially Scottish politics and Scottish biographical articles (particularly local history). Please have a read and ponder, and contribute to the debate if you like. Thanks. --Mais oui! 17:40, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

It would also be relevant in this context to consider the discussions in the parent category for the UK parliament: Category talk:British MPs. [edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland

Pre-script: we are currently undergoing peer review, see: Wikipedia:Peer review/Scotland.

I am beginning to think that the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board is not the best vehicle for pushing up the quality of the Scotland article (we ought to try to get it to WP:FA, in order to get into Wikipedia:Version 0.5, or, failing that, Wikipedia:Version 1.0), and the other key Scottish articles. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that we really ought to start up the long-mooted WikiProject Scotland.

Most of the stuff at the notice board (at least on the bottom half) is actually WikiProject material anyway, and the Talk page is really being used as a WikiProject talk already! The notice board should be just that: for bunging up brief notices and signposts. I am thinking of launching a Wikiproject and correspondingly radically clearing out, and chopping down, the noticeboard (a re-launch if you like). The Scotland Portal concept is fine (but currently mediocre/undynamic content), but in stasis: it needs a good kick up the jacksie.

For comparison, have a look at:

And, if you are at a loose end, have a look at:

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland

Following a successful period of consultation WikiProject Scotland has now been launched. As a participant in the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board I wonder if you may be interested in this new endeavour too? If so, please sign-up here. The WikiProject will be replacing some of the functions of the notice board, especially those in the lower half.

While I am here, please also have a look at the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Scotland and give it a "Watch". It was started up by User:Visviva a few days ago, after long being mooted at the notice board, and effectively replaces all the AfD listings at the notice board. Being a transclusion of all the on-going discussions it is a much more useful tool.

Even if you do not want to spend too much time on the WikiProject, please give it a "Watch" and feel free to contribute to Talk page discussions: the more contributors the merrier.

All the best. --Mais oui! 10:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] James Roberton

Thanks for taking a look and cleaning up this article. I was wondering if you could point the way to an explanation as to how you went about the footnotes section please? I'm pretty new to wikipedia and haven't managed to get them right yet. As a supplementary question, I tested a search on the article by typing "roberton" and not mention of the article came up. would changing the name of the article to "roberton, james" fix the problem? any advice would be appreciated.

[edit] David Douglas links

Hi Supergolden - saw your changes on links to David Douglas; on checking the page for him, I found that the page had been subjected to an improper cut-n-paste move from David Douglas to David Douglas (botanist). [edit] Castles in Scotland: Argyll and Bute: St Conan's Tower

Just to let you know, I have removed St Conan's Tower, which you added here. This is not a castle. According to "Buildings of Scotland: Argyll and Bute": "Built ca 1895. Hillside tower house in gnarled granite, reaching six stories to an onion-domed rooftop gazebo". The real reason to write this is that this is not the first time I have removed it. I wonder if there is some source out there, which you were using, which contains this (mis?)information? Notinasnaid 10:25, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello - and HELP!

Hello!

I just recieved my first suggestbot list and the very first stub to expand was Giffnock, Scotland. I've done some preliminary research, and I feel that I can expand this article greatly (it is VERY small right now).

However, the article doesn't have one of those boxes on the right-hand side that you can put various data into. Can you tell me how I would get one of those in there? If not, can you tell me who I can ask, or what tutorial I should read? I would be very grateful.

Also, if you have any pertinent websites or other info that would be helpful, I would greatly appreciate it.

If you would like to respond to me, please leave a message on my user talk page.

When I'm done, I'll submit the article to Project Scotland for review and edits.

I hope to do your land proud!

Sincerely, NinaEliza 06:55, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

That was extremely helpful. I'll dedicate myself to improving this article forthwith. I'm really excited!

Thanks so much for your speedy reply,

Update I'm sorry, but I didn't get a chance to finish this page. Some personal things have come up and I have to leave Wikipedia. I'm calling attention to this so that your project can correct the page. I'm also sorry to have left it in such a state - I really didn't know what I was doing.

Thanks so much for your help, NinaEliza 22:46, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
