Edward Whitley is a British industrialist, environmentalist and philanthropist. Heir to a large British beer industry, he was the founder of the Whitley Awards in 1994 - presently the biggest environmental awards in Europe. The Whitley Awards were initially set up by Edward Whitley as a family charity based in the United Kingdom - the Whitley Animal Protection Trust. It is presently given from the Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN). It is presently supported by many organizations, and benefactors, including the Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation and Sting. The awards are presently worth 1 million pounds annually, and are unofficially called the Green Oscars.

He has also been closely associated with the famous naturalist and author Gerald Durrell, who was the founder of the visionary Jersey Zoo and Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Whitley helped raise 1 million pounds in support funds for the International Training Centre of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust in 1989. He is also the author of the book Gerald Durrell's Army - about the work carried on by members and trainees of the Trust in different parts of the world.
