Edward Stanley, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edward Lyulph Stanley , 4th Baron Sheffield, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 3th Baron Eddisbury (1839 - 1925), was an English aristocrat.

The fourth Lord Sheffield and Stanley saw much of the land adjoining the north of his Alderley Park estate, previously owned by the de Trafford family, sold off for the development of the railway in 1842 and a related high class commuter village. His wife, Lady Stanley, complained of the presence of visitors of higher social standing across Alderley Edge:

Moreover the Manchester gentry are much more annoying to one's comfort and enjoyment, than operatives, as one can neither hand-cuff nor great dog them if they are intrusive or offensive and for our sake (as you do not often go to the Edge) you must always keep in mind how outraged your feelings would be, if you were to see a party walking across the lawn, tho’ they were not to come near you. [Letter to Lord Stanley, Sep 10th 1843].

Stanley (then known as the Honourable Edward Lyulph Stanley) contested Oldham, in the Liberal interest, at elections in 1872, 1874, 1880 and 1885. He only won the 1880 contest and served in the House of Commons during the 1880-1885 Parliament.
