Edward Sawyer (also Nubbins) (c. 1948) is a character in the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. He is the brother of Leatherface and Chop Top. His name in the credits is just Hitchhiker. His role in the family business is to rob graves for purposes which are never made truly clear, although his "legitimate" employment was at a local slaughterhouse.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

At the end of the first movie he is run over by an eighteen-wheeler, and spends the entirety of the second film as a puppet-corpse carried around by his brother, Chop Top.

[edit] Differences between the two films

In a first draft screenplay of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, by L.M. Kit Carson, the character Chop Top was the same as the Hitchhiker of Chainsaw 1. For some reason he didn't die when the truck ran over him at the end of the original film, but ended up with a metal head plate. Indeed, the two characters have many things in common in appearance and behaviour.

Another similar change from first to final drafts is the fact that the puppet-corpse used to be Grandpa, but it ended up being Nubbins. (Grandpa, in the final draft was alive, just like he was in Chainsaw 1).
