Edward M. Korry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edward Malcolm Korry (born 1922 in New York, died January 29, 2003 in Charlotte, North Carolina) was an American diplomat during the administrations of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.
Korry was U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia (1963) and to Chile (1967-1971). Upon hearing the news that Salvador Allende was elected, he proclaimed that "not a nut or bolt shall reach Chile under Allende. Once Allende comes to power we shall do all within our power to condemn Chile and all Chileans to utmost deprivation and poverty." In actuality, while the U.S. did implement a tougher economic policy toward Chile upon Allende's inauguration, it did not take the extreme measures implied by Korry in this quote.
