Eduard Julius Ernst August Erdmann, Prince of Anhalt[1], titular Duke of Anhalt, was born on 3 December 1941,[2] the son of Joachim Ernst, Duke of Anhalt[2] (1901-1947), with four siblings.[3] Duke Joachim Ernst had married Elisabeth Strickrodt in 1927, but they were divorced within the next two years, and he remarried Editha von Marwitz, adopted von Stephani,[4] (1905-1986), the mother of his five children.[3] Prince Eduard married Corinne Krönlein (*19 August 1961) in München in 1980 and has three children:
- Princess Julia or Juliana Katharina (*14 December 1980) - born in Bad Tolz
- Princess Julia Eilika Nicole (*1 January 1985) - born in München
- Princess Julia Felizitas, or Felicitas, Leopoldine Friederike Franziska (*14 May 1993) - born in München
The Duchy of Anhalt was abolished in 1918. The modern duchy is a titular style. The family belongs to the House of Ascania. Members bore the style of His or Her Highness. The head of the house is Grand Master of the Order of Albert the Bear, founded in 1836.[5]
Prince Eduard's elder brother, Hereditary Prince Friedrich, had succeeded their father in 1947 to the title of Duke of Anhalt.[3][6] Prince Friedrich died childless in 1963, leaving Prince Eduard to assume the role of head of the ducal house and style of HH Prince Eduard II. The family has a castle at Ballenstedt, where Prince Eduard and his siblings were all born.[4]
