Edmund Law

Rt Rev Edmund Law (1703-1787) was an English churchman.

He was born in Cartmel Lancashire, and educated at Kendal Grammar School and St John's College, Cambridge; he received his M. A. in 1727.

He was Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge from 1756-68; vice-chancellor of the University, 1755-6; librarian of the University of Cambridge, 1760 and Knightsbridge Professor of Moral Philosophy from 1764 until 1769. He was Bishop of Carlisle, 1768-87.

He was said to be a great personal influence on the intellectual development of Richard Watson, Bishop of Landaff.
