Edinburgh derby
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Edinburgh derby is an informal title given to any football match played between the two biggest teams in Edinburgh, Scotland, Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) and Hibernian (Hibs). The two teams have a fierce rivalry that dates back to when they were founded. Local cup competitions such as the East of Scotland Shield, Rosebery Charity Cup, Wilson Cup, and the Dunedin Cup were regularly contested, amongst the various clubs of the area and due to the relative strength of both Hearts and Hibs, they were the most frequent winners of these competitions.
The games are usually played to a sell-out crowd. In the late 1970s to mid 1980s, crowd trouble between the opposing fans was sadly common, although today this is not a major issue.
The record crowd for an Edinburgh derby was 65,860 on 2 January 1950 when Hearts won 2-1 at Easter Road. This is also the biggest crowd for any Scottish game outside of Glasgow. [1]
The Edinburgh derby is currently played three or four times a year in the SPL, depending on whether both teams finish in the same section after the league splits in two near the end of the season. The teams sometimes also play against one another in cup tournaments (the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup). This has seldom happened in recent decades, although they did meet at Hampden Park in the semi-final of the 2006 Scottish Cup (Hearts winning by 4-0), and also faced each other on November 8, 2006 in the quarter-final of the 2006-07 League Cup (Hibs winning 1-0). Their most famous cup meeting occurred in the 1896 Scottish Cup Final, the only final played outside of Glasgow, which was won 3-1 by Hearts.
The matches are normally played at either Easter Road or Tynecastle. In 2004, a cup was introduced to tie in with the Edinburgh Festival, called the Festival Cup, which was played between the two clubs before the start of the domestic season. However, after only two years competition, 2004 & 2005, the idea appears to have been quietly dropped.
At various times there were 3 other Edinburgh based league clubs St Bernards, Leith Athletic and Edinburgh City. The first 'league derby' was between Hearts and Leith Athletic on 24th Oct 1891. Hearts winning 3-1 before a home crowd of 4,000.

[edit] Records in these matches
Currently, Hearts have the better record in derbies, with 121 wins to Hibs' 73 wins in all competitive matches. There have also been a total of 82 draws. There have been nearly 600 Edinburgh derbies to date.
Season 1886-87 was Hibs best ever against their local rivals in terms of goal scoring. Hibs winning 5-1 in the 3rd round at Easter Road on the way to becoming the first ‘Eastern’ club to win the Scottish Cup. This was followed by wins of 3-0, 5-2 and 7-1. In the latter James McGhee scored 5 goals in the first 25 minutes. Giving an average score of the 4 games of ‘5-1’.
The defeat of the then Cup Holders in the following season 1887-88 marked the end of Hibs domination over Hearts in the Cup and overall domination in the Derby. They would not enjoy a similar sustained period of success in the fixture until the late 1960s and early 1970s.
A derby match was traditionally played each New Year, on either the 1st or 2nd of January. This has not taken place in recent years. Of the 88 such games played Hibs hold a slight lead with 31 wins, 29 draws and Hearts winning 28 times. The last game played on the 1st was in 1998, when the teams drew 2-2. [2]
Hearts hold the record for consecutive derbies without a loss, a 22 game streak in the 1980s and 1990s. Hibs recorded the biggest derby win in a competitive match, a 7-0 victory at Tynecastle on 1 January 1973, while the biggest win in all fixtures was a 10-2 Hearts victory on 12 August 1893.
[edit] Top Goalscorers
Hearts have the top goalscorer, John Robertson, who scored 27 goals against Hibs in 'competitive' games. Robertson was nicknamed "The Hammer of Hibs" due to his prolific goal record against Hibernian. Both Bobby Walker with 33 and Tommy Walker with 29 scored more taking account of the 'local' Cup and league games.
Hibs top scorer with 15 goals was Gordon Smith, who later joined Hearts and Dundee, becoming the only player to win the Scottish League with three different clubs. James McGhee scored at least 24 goals for Hibs in the early years of the fixture. The real figure is probably higher as there are a lot of games where only the result is known and not all the scorers. [3]
