Edinburgh University A.F.C.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edinburgh University AFC are a football club representing the University of Edinburgh. They currently play in the East of Scotland Football League.

Established in 1878, they are third oldest club in East of Scotland football and has been a member of the Scottish Football Association (S.F.A) since that year. In fact, Edinburgh University was one of the founder members of the SFA and therefore the club has been eligible to compete in the Scottish Cup every season. The Club's present home is at Peffermill, where it has played since its move from Canal Field in 1978.

The Club won its first trophy in 1883 where they famously beat Heart of Midlothian F.C. 5-2 in the final of the Edinburgh Shield and has gone on to enjoy several other successes since then. Historically it is the number one and most successful footballing University in Scotland, winning the Scottish Universities Queen Park Shield 24 times since it donated the trophy in 1921. Edinburgh University also claimed the British Universities Cup in 1994 and continue to constantly qualify for the knock-out stages of the competition. The most recent achievements of the club include winning the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup in 2005 and finishing in 3rd position in the East of Scotland Premier Division last season, a feat which all at the club are fiercely proud of given the standard of competition in the East of Scotland. In October 2006 the side beat Vale of Leithen 3-0 to reach the first round proper of the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1973 [1]. In November 2006 they defeated Keith to procede to the second round of the Scottish Cup for only the second time in the club's history and 106 years after their first appearance at this stage. The team's 2006 cup run was halted by Fife team Cowdenbeath who defeated the University 5-1 at Central Park on 9th December 2006 [2].
