Edge of Seventeen (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Edge of Seventeen (White-winged Dove)" is one of Stevie Nicks' most popular songs from her highly successful debut album, Bella Donna. Released as a single in early 1982, it made the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 (#11), and the Top 5 of Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, peaking at number four.

The title supposedly comes from a time when Nicks asked Tom Petty's wife when they met. His wife said, "At the age of seventeen," but she had a very strong Southern accent; Nicks thought she said "the edge of seventeen" and liked the sound of the phrase. Appropriate for a song titled for a double-entendre, it has given rise to many "misheard lyrics". Stevie has said that the reference to the "white-winged dove" in the song is a memorial to John Lennon.

The song's title was used for 1998's award-winning independent film Edge of Seventeen. The song itself appeared in the film's soundtrack.

The song was featured in the 2003 comedy film School of Rock, which starred Jack Black. The song was covered by Lindsay Lohan on her sophomore album A Little More Personal (Raw). The song was also covered by Jonas Tomalty on his debut album, Jonas.

The distinctive 16th-note guitar riff of the single was sampled in the Destiny's Child song "Bootylicious." Nicks made an appearance in the music video.
