Edakkad

The referenc here is Edakkad of Kannur. It is called 'Madyadavi' in the history and latter it become known as Edakkad. It is the Oorpazhachi Temple at Edakkad makes this place a historic one.

The author of Prasnamarga an authentic book on astrology still referred, was written by an eminent Namboodiri from Edakkad. Edakkadappan Temple where Lord Nrisimaha is the presiding deity was the place from where this book was written.

Sree oorpazachi Kavu as the name suggest is surrounded by Eachil groves which is known for its medicinal values. The importance of this temple which make it more historically relevant is the synthesis of dravidian and Aryan traditions. We find here a 'Kavu' Grove as well as an ambalam 'temple'.

Madhyadavi is a sanscrit word which means a forest in the middle. The malyalam translation of Madhyadavi is edakkad, eda means middle; kad means forest. The remnants of this 'kadu' shall be still seen on the south east of sree oorpazachi kavu Temple.

The name oorpazachi has gone for two interpretations: 1. It is the ooril pazakiya eachil kavu, i.e a grove which is very ancient in the village. 2. It is the ooril pazhakiya achi kavu, referring the deity of Mother sakthi. Achi stands for amma which means mother. Quite a large number of households have Sakthipeedams and shakteya poojas

This panchayat has a mixed population. Of the Hindus we find more Ezhavas (Thiyyas) and Nambiars. The moslem population has also increased in number over the year with two mosques available for praryer. The mosque at Edakkad bazzar is quite old.

There are two primary schools at Edakkad. Most of the students have to go either at Kadachira or Thottada which are near by villages (with in the Edakkad panchayat) for secondary schooling.

Traditionally the people of Edakkad are farmers. However we see Saliya Theruvu where weaving is an important occupation. Weaving is now carried out in many houses in the village of Edakkad. Sree Ganapathy temple is a historic place located to the west of Edakkad.

Inderi Oottu is a yearly festival at Indery Ambalam near Edakkad bazzar. In olden times vendors from different parts of kerala used to reach at this location with their wares to sell.

As kerala is said to be the land of God, Edakkad amsam desam is the land of deivasthanams, a replica of a north malabar village.

The break of the Janmi- kudiyan system helped a large number of people to be the landowners resulting in the decline of Illam dominations. However as cultivation of paddy has become burdensome, and the demand for land to construct houses are on the increase, most paddy fields have given way to growing coconuts and reclaiming it to make houses.

The Edakkadan watermelon (baththakka) was famous in the early days. Now it is only a nostalgia. People used to cultivate vegetables especially watermelon cucumber etc immediately after the second harvest. They are now only remembrance of the past for the people of Edakkad.
